Winter Champs 2023

What made you choose your deck? What does your deck do?

I chose Wyrm because it’s very consistent and I won the last Champs with a much more suboptimal build. I didn’t want to run into bad RNG in this Champs, so playing a deck with tons of ways to make plays seemed like a good idea. The deck aims to summon Halq and Jiaotu with a set Swordsoul Blackout or Buddy Force for disruption or to break boards and use the Swordsoul and Tenyi portions to win the game.

What were some tech choices you made? Would you make any changes to the list moving forward?

I decided to add Mathmech Sigma and Equation this time. Sigma was useful whenever it came up, but Equation always bricked even though it came up a lot in testing. I also decided to main deck the triple Buddy Force since it’s decent going first and second. That was useful for summoning back Denglong and getting a ton of plusses. I would cut Equation and add Maxx “C” which just came off the banlist, add Pot of Desires, and maybe add Golden Swordsoul.

How did your tournament experience go? Any notable moments?

It was pretty great whenever I opened the combo. I also didn’t run into a lot of disruption, so I resolved a lot of Mo Ye and Halq. Reviving Denglong with Buddy Force was amazing whenever it happened, giving me a +2 basically. The most notable moments for me were the matches against Folo in Swiss and Finals, when I went second and beat some pretty strong boards that included an Amorphage Envy lock.

What are your hot takes on the tournament, ban list, or Trinity in general?

Runick Fountain to Unlim pls.

What does your sleep schedule look like and why?

I go to sleep around 10:00 - 12:00 depending on how I’m feeling and if there’s anything that needs to be done.

What made you choose your deck? What does your deck do?

Same old, same old. Basically my deck has the good pend cards, the pend cards I do not run are bad. The gameplan is to go and win somehow, it basically tries to be midrange but is not really.

What were some tech choices you made? Would you make any changes to the list moving forward?

I will talk a bit about the changes since I last wrote about my deck for the october YTC. I was too lazy to write for my december top, but deck has changed little since then, so we can take this to be inclusive (I was also too lazy to write for fall champs but ignore that, the deck is in continuous progression anyway). Since october the main change has been metalfoes combination becoming forbidden. I, perhaps controversially, decided not to reduce the amount of metalfoes in my deck due to that, so I am still running 2 trinities on foes, as I find being able to freely change around my scales with metalfoes to be too good, also there is no other good source of normal monsters. Next I put giltia in side since opening him up going 1st sucked, though I may cut him since he has not turned out too well even going 2nd. I have also cut foolish burial since I decided it was too risky with one target. A notable change has been the addition of majesty pegasus and the dracoslayer field spell. Basically the field spell is just a plus cause I run a lot of metalfoes, while majesty gets me field spells, which I do want, a lot, it has been good for me overall. I am running scared sword over allure for this ytc compared to the october list, but basically I am just flitting around between these two. Another notable change is the replacement of axi with thuban and consequent lack of archethys. Basically that was not comign up so much so I decided a level 4 that had a pop effect would probably work out better and also give me more ed space. I am not sure if that has been a good decision, it probably depends on preference. For this event I tried exciton knight, it did not actually work that well, I would probably cut it if I had another place to spend a point. I am also back on evilswarm nightmare, which I take out and put back in once in a while. It has not been very good this time, though I still like it as an idea, main problem being that it is inconsitent. For my side deck: at one point I ended up moving persona to side, but I realised you never really side that thing in, so now it is gone from my list entirely. I have also included abyss dweller in side, which was very relevant, a good choice. Double amorphage did not really come up, I never drew amorphages, had to search them, but bascially idea is just a bit more consistency. Most of the rest of the side is just generic cards I flit around on. There are two main changes neeeded: apollousa should be replaced with draco masters, since that guy comes up a lot more, and abyss dweller should find some room in the extra deck, it is too good to side. Probably need to cut exciton to fit him, though you can also cut nightmare. Maindeck is mostly fine I think: I do not see room for significant improvements till CYAC. Losing amorphages in side with the new banlist is big and I do not have a replacement. I had issues with rituals so the sidedeck should probably include cards like dimensional barrier and retaliating "c", can add a maxx "c" to search with that too, also bystials.

How did your tournament experience go? Any notable moments?

It was fine, usual pend diceroll, hope your opp does not draw good cards, I do not think there is a way to build pend that avoids this. Destroying Erika twice was pretty fun, just try that meta-call against pend SMH. Pend is its own meta.

What are your hot takes on the tournament, ban list, or Trinity in general?

Ok so basically, unban aleister: idk why my proposal did not go through last banlist, but aleister does not do anything amazing in current year. Also I still think monkeyboard is bad unban that. Overall though, the banlist and game are in a good state right now, but people like babyraging as usual.

What does your sleep schedule look like and why?

It's all over the place, some days I sleep for 3 hours, somedays 8, somedays I go to sleep at midnight, some days at 7 am. It depends very much on how I feel, not that I go to sleep late cause i'm watching anime or something, it's usually due to health related issues causing issues, or me just getting in the grove with some work and not stopping till i'm dead. It's all crappy overall and I feel like ass in the mornings, but I don't have the will to fix it.

What made you choose your deck? What does your deck do?

Well, I was initially brewing some Ninja lists, but as much as I love them, ninjas are bricky in anything but an optimal brew, and I need that jank. So then the day of the event I decided to crack open my Madolche list and jam all the new earth fairy support into it, there was nearly zero thought to this deck, but all the incidental synergies I found mid-event were incredible.

What were some tech choices you made? Would you make any changes to the list moving forward?

My tech choices were basically any card that bounces or spins: Ishizus, Vivid Trail, BOTH Compulses, because using them on my own Madolches triggers Salon and Ticket, which is where the decks snowball and prison gamestate comes from.

I think my particular list was a bit of an incidental good metagame call thanks to madolche and ishizus' easy access to GY hate. Some decks just literally can't deal with Glassouffle and I am HERE FOR IT. The vernalizers got better over my run as I figured out how to actually use their archetypal effects beyond them just being Double Summon, so that was cool. Vera summon Petit is a pretty cracked play that can potentially enable Vera's negate, since you're adding two bodies.

What are your hot takes on the tournament, ban list, or Trinity in general?

My banlist hot take is that WE HAVE BEEN TOO NICE TO PENDULUM FOR TOO LONG, FOLO DOESN'T TOP ONE EVENT AND WE PROPOSE UNHITS, LIKE WTF? Back in the day we thought folo abusing the Evil Eye engine was bad, but honestly, that version of Pendulum was so so so much more tolerable. We should unironically unban Evil Eye of Selene with zero concessions and nuke all the core players of folo's current build. Zefranui and Electrumite. Pendulum is already interacting on a different axis by means of it's mechanic making destruction and gy hate, two of the most universal forms of interaction entirely null, and making tempo the only actually important game factor. I think this is enough of a strengh, and the deck REALLY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE NICE THINGS ANYMORE. Also it's a cruddy matchup for madolche so kill plz, folo was all 2 of my losses.

What does your sleep schedule look like and why?

Unfortunately, I work a 9 to 5, so I get normal adulting 8 hours of sleep from 11pm to 7am 😔

What made you choose your deck? What does your deck do?

Chaos is fun because you use resources in hand, graveyard, and banish. The way I built it was so that I would be able to do something each turn, whether it's add a Thunder Dragon card by banishing Thunder Dragondark, or searching a Thunder monster with Thunder Dragon Fusion, or linking into Dharc or Lyna to take a dark or light monster from my opponent's graveyard.

What were some tech choices you made? Would you make any changes to the list moving forward?

I sided cards like silent graveyard, nobleman of crossout, and different dimension ground to try to combat the current meta. For a future list I'd probably add in more Bystial stuff now that it's been unhit, and remove or side a few of the battle phase cards like Golden Swordsoul and Juragedo.

How did your tournament experience go? Any notable moments?

It was fun. There were no notable moments.

What are your hot takes on the tournament, ban list, or Trinity in general?

It's not what it used to be, and is getting harder and harder to balance. I think it's fine to have it like this though.
